maui…hookipa

one evening we decided to take a drive to hookipa, a beach that is famous for surfing and windsurfing.  it is on the other side of the island where the waves are much larger.  we planned on just watching the surfing, but were pleasantly surprised by a large pod of whales just off the shore.  the whole time we were in maui, we were always looking at the water to try to spot the spray from the whales.

some of the surfing.  it is amazing to me that the waves never look as big in the pictures as they really are.
